Breathedge 2 difficulty modes: Story, Easy, and Standard

Official Hotfix 0.8.6 facts for Story, Easy, and Standard: a mid-save switch, a 15% Standard drain cut, and no published Story or Easy multipliers.

What Hotfix 0.8.6 says

Hotfix 0.8.6 (2026-09-02 CST) is the version anchor for difficulty on this page. The official notes say food, water, and fatigue drain rates were reduced by 15% in Standard mode, because player feedback said hunger and thirst drained too fast.

The same notes say that if the game still feels too demanding, Easy and Story difficulties exist, and you can switch at any point without starting a new game. A related fix on that post: DIY upgrades installed into a food or water machine no longer reset to 100 durability when removed. Meter habits after the −15% change live on the food, water, and fatigue pacing page. This site does not sell the game.

Can you switch difficulty mid-save?

Yes. The official Hotfix 0.8.6 notes say you can switch at any point without starting a new game. That statement names Easy and Story as the difficulties to use when Standard still feels too demanding. The note does not add a requirement to finish a chapter first. Switching does not require a new save.

As of the 2026-09-29 check, later official news through Hotfix 0.8.10 (2026-09-23 CST) does not retract that reminder. Recheck the live difficulty control after any future balance hotfix. This page does not invent a menu path. Open the control the current build actually shows.

What do Story, Easy, and Standard change?

The Hotfix 0.8.6 note names Standard, Easy, and Story, and it publishes one number. Standard is the mode whose food, water, and fatigue drain was cut by 15%. Easy and Story are the named alternatives you can switch to mid-save. The note does not publish Story or Easy drain multipliers, and it does not say these three labels are the only ones in the settings menu.

Do not copy a multiplier from a video, a forum post, or an older demo onto this page. If the current settings screen or Encyclopedia describes a mode, that in-game text outranks a third-party percentage. This site will add a number only when an official note or a dated current-build check records it.

  • Read the difficulty control in the current settings menu before you change it
  • Read any Encyclopedia entry the build shows for that mode
  • Treat 15% as the Standard food, water, and fatigue drain change from 0.8.6, not as a Story or Easy figure
  • Leave absolute drain timers off the plan; this page does not publish them
  • Switch mid-save when Standard still feels too demanding; the official note says a new game is not required

Story is a valid way to finish Chapter 1

Story is a valid accessibility choice for finishing the Chapter 1 content in the current Early Access build. The developers present Easy and Story as the option when the game still feels too demanding. A player who wants that chapter without the Standard meter pace can switch, keep the save, and continue.

The Steam store still describes oxygen, temperature, scavenging, crafting, and the first major story chapter as part of this build. This page does not claim that Story removes those systems, skips quests, or changes Chapter 1 objectives. If a marker or interaction is the blocker, open Chapter 1 stuck points. Difficulty is the pacing lever. A missing marker is a different problem.

Pair the switch with food, water, and fatigue pacing

Food, water, and fatigue pacing owns the habits after the Standard −15% change: read the HUD, stabilize production, and date a “drains too fast” complaint to whether the save is pre- or post-0.8.6. This page owns the difficulty lever next to those habits.

If production is already stable and Standard still ends trips on hunger, thirst, or fatigue, Easy or Story is the official accessibility option. Early upgrade priority still owns which craft lengthens a route. Oxygen pages still own air. Changing difficulty does not replace a station refill or a missing tool.

What notes through 0.8.10 do not publish

As of 2026-09-29, the latest official Steam news post for app 2412960 is still 0.8.10 (2026-09-23 CST). That post reduces movement-speed penalties from the fatigue, overeating, and overload debuffs. That is a movement penalty. It is not a published Story, Easy, or Standard drain multiplier, and it does not say the mid-save difficulty switch was removed.

The official posts for 0.8.7 (2026-09-05 CST), 0.8.8 (2026-09-10 CST), and 0.8.9 (2026-09-13 CST), read on the same check, also leave difficulty multipliers unpublished and do not retract the 0.8.6 switch. Those posts stay the softlock, Chapter 1, Suit VO, and Deck record on the community discussion watch.

How this guide is maintained

Recheck this page when a hotfix changes difficulty, drain rates, or the mid-save switch. Until an official note publishes Story or Easy multipliers, those numbers stay off the page. The in-game settings control and the Encyclopedia remain the live description.

How this guide is maintained

Breathedge 2 Guide treats official store and developer pages as the primary source of truth. Current-build community evidence can answer gaps the developers have not documented, but it is clearly labelled, attributed, and checked against conflicting reports.

Exact routes, recipes, timers, and balance values are dated when verified. If a detail is still uncertain, the guide says so instead of filling the gap with a guess.
